The Smoky Hills — Sandstone Hoodoos, Grassroots Art & the Wilson Lake Bluffs
Drive three and a half hours west of Kansas City and the tallgrass gives way to the Smoky Hills, a rolling region of buff sandstone bluffs, canyon-cut creeks, and impossibly blue reservoirs where central Kansas turns strange and beautiful. This three-day loop is built around rock, water, and one of America's great folk-art oddities. Day one explores Kanopolis State Park — the oldest in Kansas, with red-rock canyon trails and cave-pocked bluffs — and the sculpted sandstone mushrooms of Mushroom Rock State Park. Day two crosses the Smoky Hills to the tiny town of Lucas, self-proclaimed grassroots-art capital of Kansas, home of the astonishing Garden of Eden, then swims and hikes at deep-blue Wilson Lake, the clearest reservoir in the state. Day three climbs to the Coronado Heights sandstone castle for a last panorama before turning east. Nights are spent near Salina and Kanopolis.

★ 4.6The smallest state park in Kansas is also one of its strangest and most wonderful: a cluster of giant sandstone mushrooms and hoodoos where softer rock has eroded away beneath harder caprock, leaving boulders balanced on slender stems like something from another planet. The largest mushrooms stand over 25 feet tall and 27 feet across, formed from Dakota sandstone concretions laid down in an ancient sea. These formations were landmarks for Native peoples and for pioneers on the Butterfield Overland Despatch trail. It is a quick, magical stop — walk among the rocks, marvel at the balance, and get the photographs before the light goes. A short, easy path loops the formations.

The Garden of Eden — Lucas
★ 4.6The tiny town of Lucas bills itself as the grassroots-art capital of Kansas, and its centerpiece is the astonishing Garden of Eden — a home and yard that Civil War veteran Samuel Dinsmoor spent two decades encasing in more than 100 tons of concrete sculpture beginning in 1907. Populist political allegories, biblical scenes, and a concrete flag tree loom over the lot, and Dinsmoor himself lies in a glass-topped concrete coffin in a mausoleum he built on site, visible to visitors to this day. It is one of the most singular folk-art environments in America, equal parts eccentric, political, and genuinely moving. Take the guided tour, then wander the surrounding streets, where the town has embraced its oddball identity with murals and quirky roadside art at every turn.

★ 4.7Rising 300 feet above the Smoky Hill River valley near the Swedish town of Lindsborg, Coronado Heights is a flat-topped sandstone bluff crowned by a whimsical stone castle built by the WPA in the 1930s. The hill is named for the Spanish explorer Coronado, whose 1541 expedition is believed to have reached this area in its fruitless search for the golden city of Quivira. Short trails loop the bluff top and its sandstone outcrops, and from the castle's parapet the view sweeps across the patchwork farmland and open hills for miles in every direction. It is a superb final overlook of the Smoky Hills country, and you can climb right up onto the castle roof for the full panorama. Bring a jacket; the wind on top is constant.
