Two hours northeast of Knoxville, the Roan Highlands crown the Tennessee–North Carolina line with the largest natural rhododendron gardens in the world and the longest stretch of grassy balds on the entire Appalachian Trail. Day one settles into Roan Mountain State Park and climbs to the famous rhododendron gardens atop the 6,000-foot Roan massif. Day two walks the open, wind-swept balds from Carvers Gap along the Appalachian Trail — Round Bald, Jane Bald, and Grassy Ridge — for some of the most sweeping high-country views in the East. Day three descends to the dramatic Doe River Gorge and finishes at Sycamore Shoals in Elizabethton, a pivotal frontier and Revolutionary War site, before the drive home. Roan High Knob Rhododendron Gardens
★ 4.8Atop the Roan massif lie the Roan Mountain rhododendron gardens, the largest natural stand of Catawba rhododendron in the world — some 600 acres that erupt into a sea of magenta bloom in June, one of the great floral spectacles of the Appalachians. A paved and graveled interpretive loop trail winds through the gardens near the 6,285-foot summit area, with benches, overlooks, and signs explaining the rare high-elevation ecosystem and the Fraser fir–red spruce forest that surrounds it. Even outside bloom season the cool spruce-fir forest, the mist, and the northern feel of the mountaintop make it a remarkable place to walk. Dress warmly — it is routinely twenty degrees cooler and far breezier here than in the valley below.

The small community of Roan Mountain, just outside the park, has a handful of diners and grills serving hearty East Tennessee mountain fare — country cooking, burgers, trout, and homemade pie — the natural refuel between the summit gardens and the afternoon park trails. It is a modest, friendly place to eat and the closest food to the park, with Elizabethton offering more options a bit farther down the valley. Grab water and snacks here for the afternoon. Those who would rather stay in the park can pack a picnic to eat at the streamside tables along the Doe River instead.

The Doe River Trail and connecting loops wander the streamside with wading spots and quiet pools, while the short climb to the restored Miller Farmstead opens onto a hillside meadow with a fine view back up to the Roan crest and its spruce-fir cap. The walking is easy to moderate and richly forested, a relaxing counterpoint to the high summit earlier in the day and a good way to settle into the rhythm of the trip. Roan Mountain Overnight
The overnight base is in and around the town of Roan Mountain, at the foot of the massif. Roan Mountain State Park rents rustic cabins in the woods and runs a seasonal campground along the Doe River — the most convenient and atmospheric choice, and a fine first-night base for tomorrow's early start to the balds. The town also has a few small motels and cabin rentals, and Elizabethton, about twenty-five minutes down the valley, offers additional inns and chain hotels. Book the park cabins well ahead in June rhododendron season.

Carvers Gap — Round Bald & Jane Bald
★ 4.9Carvers Gap, at 5,512 feet on the Tennessee–North Carolina line, is the launch point for the finest bald hiking on the entire Appalachian Trail. Heading north, the AT climbs almost immediately out of the trees onto Round Bald, a rolling dome of open grassland with 360-degree views, then continues over Jane Bald across a ridge of wind-cropped heath and rock. These grassy balds — treeless mountaintops whose origin is still debated — string together for miles here, offering the longest stretch of open high-country walking on the trail. The footpath is well worn and the balds are exposed to sun, wind, and fast-changing weather, so carry layers, sun protection, and plenty of water. Even the first mile to Round Bald delivers the trip's signature panorama.

★ 4.9For those with the legs for it, continuing past Jane Bald leads to Grassy Ridge Bald, at over 6,100 feet the highest grassy bald in the Roan Highlands and one of the great viewpoints of the Southern Appalachians. A spur trail leaves the Appalachian Trail and climbs to the broad, open summit, where the balds fall away on every side and the view sweeps across the Roan crest, the deep valleys, and range after range of blue mountains into North Carolina and Virginia. In June the ridge is dotted with wild Catawba rhododendron and flame azalea. This is the natural turnaround for the day before retracing the ridge to Carvers Gap.

Summit Picnic on the Balds
★ 4.6There is no food anywhere on the high balds, so a packed lunch carried up from the valley is the only meal option — and one of the finest picnic settings in the East. Spread it on the open grass of Grassy Ridge or Round Bald with the whole Roan crest and range after range of blue mountains falling away on every side. Provision in Roan Mountain or Elizabethton before the drive to Carvers Gap, and carry plenty of water; the balds are fully exposed with no reliable source up top. Pack out every scrap to protect the fragile bald ecosystem.

Roan High Bluff & Cloudland Overlook
★ 4.9Back at Carvers Gap, drive up the summit road on the western side of the massif to the Roan High Bluff area, site of the long-vanished Cloudland Hotel that once straddled the state line in the 1880s. A short trail leads to the Roan High Bluff overlook, a railed platform on a rock prominence with a dizzying drop and a huge westward view over the North Carolina mountains — often above a sea of clouds, which gave Cloudland its name. The cool spruce-fir forest and the network of short paths near the summit make an easy, scenic wind-down after the morning on the balds. It is a fitting end to the high day before descending to the valley for the night.

Elizabethton offers the fuller range of lodging — chain hotels along the highways, a few local inns, and river cabins — plus more restaurant choices for dinner than the small town of Roan Mountain. The town's covered bridge, lit at night over the Doe River, is a pleasant evening stroll. Those who prefer to stay put can remain in a Roan Mountain cabin, a bit farther from tomorrow's stops.

Doe River Gorge
★ 4.9Between Roan Mountain and Elizabethton, the Doe River has cut a steep, rugged canyon — the Doe River Gorge — through the mountains, so narrow and sheer that the old East Tennessee and Western North Carolina narrow-gauge railroad, the beloved "Tweetsie," had to be blasted and tunneled through the rock to pass. Today much of the gorge is held by a private camp that opens the historic rail grade, tunnels, and trestles to visitors on scheduled days, offering a dramatic walk beside the whitewater through rock cuts and old railway tunnels. Where public access is limited, the gorge is still spectacular from the roadside pull-offs and overlooks along US-19E, where the river churns through the narrows far below. Elizabethton Lunch Stop
Downtown Elizabethton has a growing cluster of cafes, grills, a brewery, and barbecue spots, many within walking distance of the historic covered bridge over the Doe River. It is the ideal midday stop between the gorge and Sycamore Shoals, serving everything from smoked meats and burgers to lighter cafe fare in a revitalized small-town setting. As the last real town before the drive back to Knoxville, it is also the place to fuel up and grab anything for the road. For those wanting to eat on-site, Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park has shaded riverside picnic areas along the Watauga.

★ 4.8Sycamore Shoals, on the banks of the Watauga River in Elizabethton, is one of the most significant frontier sites in America — the ground where the independent Watauga Association formed one of the first majority-rule governments west of the Appalachians, where the vast Transylvania land purchase from the Cherokee was negotiated in 1775, and where the Overmountain Men mustered in 1780 before marching to their pivotal Revolutionary War victory at Kings Mountain. Today a state historic park interprets it all, with a reconstructed Fort Watauga, a visitor center and museum, and easy riverside walking trails and greenway along the Watauga's shoals. It is a fitting, reflective final stop — pairing the region's dramatic natural landscape with the human history that unfolded here — before the drive back to Knoxville.
