Taylors Falls: Glacial Potholes, Basalt Climbing & the St. Croix Dalles

Interstate State Park protects the most dramatic evidence of glacial meltwater erosion in North America — the Dalles of the St. Croix, a canyon of 1.1-billion-year-old columnar basalt through which the glacial St. Croix River discharged at tremendous volume 10,000 years ago; the turbulent meltwater carried gravel and boulders in rotating eddies that drilled cylindrical holes into the basalt bedrock over millennia; the deepest pothole measured at Interstate is 60 feet deep and 12 feet wide, with sheer vertical walls of polished basalt — among the deepest potholes in the world; the Pothole Trail leads past 21 named potholes, the largest of which, the Bottomless Pit, is visible from the trail rim.

The basalt columns of the Dalles provide one of the most distinctive rock climbing environments in the Upper Midwest — traditional crack climbing routes follow the vertical joints between basalt columns, with grades ranging from 5.6 to 5.12. The Great Wall and the Stack areas are the primary crags; the basalt is abrasive and holds tend to be positive but sharp. The St. Croix River runs directly below several of the climbing areas, providing an unusual combination of cliff and river views; local outfitter Wild Mountain operates guided climbing sessions for beginners who want an introduction to the specific demands of basalt crack climbing.

The St. Croix Dalles below the Interstate Park dam offer some of the most scenic flatwater paddling in the Upper Midwest — the basalt canyon walls rise 70 feet above the river, herons and bald eagles nest on the cliff ledges, and the current is gentle enough for recreational paddlers. Wild Mountain Canoe Rental and St. Croix River Outfitters both operate from Taylors Falls; the 8-mile paddle to Osceola passes through the heart of the Dalles before the canyon opens into the broader St. Croix floodplain, and the return shuttle runs on weekends throughout the summer season.

The Angel Hill Trail follows the limestone escarpment above Taylors Falls through oak woodland and past the oldest surviving 1850s buildings in Minnesota — the hilltop district of pre-Civil War Greek Revival homes that constituted the original Taylors Falls townsite. The trail offers elevated views into the Dalles gorge below; in spring the south-facing slopes support trillium, wild ginger, and bloodroot wildflowers, and the views from the hill's edge look directly down into the basalt canyon where the St. Croix runs as a silver thread far below.

107 acres of open river-bottom meadow and forest just south of Taylors Falls on the St. Croix contain over 100 large-scale sculpture installations — always free admission, always changing. The park operates a residency program and artists construct works on-site; the combination of flat landscape and boreal-edge forest gives each piece a dramatic natural setting that indoor galleries cannot approximate. Particularly effective at golden hour when the light across the meadow turns the steel sculptures orange and the river bottomland takes on the amber tone of a landscape at the threshold between day and dusk.
