Afton State Park: Bluff Trails, St. Croix Swimming & Heron Rookeries

The combination of river views, a classic midwestern menu, and the inn's historic character makes it the most atmospheric midday option in the immediate Afton area.

The St. Croix River beach at Afton State Park is one of the few publicly accessible, supervised swimming beaches on the St. Croix — a sandy-bottomed cove where the river runs clear and relatively calm. The beach is visible from the bluff trails above, and the combination of swimming and hiking makes Afton the most complete summer outdoor recreation option within a half-hour of Minneapolis. The water temperature in summer ranges from 68 to 75°F, and the beach is supervised by lifeguards on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The 425-acre nature preserve adjacent to Afton State Park operates year-round educational programs on the St. Croix Valley ecosystem — raptor flight demonstrations, guided botanical walks, and native plant gardens showcasing the prairie and oak savanna species that once blanketed the bluffs above the river. In summer, the Afton Alps ski hill operates mountain bike trails and a scenic chairlift above the St. Croix River valley — the ridgeline views from the top of the hill extend across the Wisconsin bluffs and the broad river corridor below, a panorama that rewards the short chairlift ride in a way that few easily accessible viewpoints in the metro area can match. In winter it is the closest alpine ski hill to Minneapolis with 18 runs and a 350-foot vertical drop; the base lodge serves food and drinks year-round on the deck overlooking the river valley, making it a natural sunset stop after a day on Afton's hiking trails.

Stillwater is 15 minutes from Afton and worth a stop before returning to Minneapolis — the riverfront restaurant strip has good burgers, craft beer, and views of the St. Croix River bluffs. A natural end-of-day stop on the drive home.
