Duluth & Two Harbors: Lighthouses, Glensheen & the Big Lake

The Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge spans the 300-foot-wide ship canal connecting Lake Superior to the Duluth-Superior harbor — the world's largest freshwater port by tonnage, handling more cargo annually than the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach combined in the peak shipping years. The bridge was built in 1905 as a transporter bridge, a design in which a gondola suspended below a fixed horizontal span ferried passengers and vehicles across the canal without disrupting ship traffic above or below; it was converted to a vertical lift in 1929 and now has 138 feet of vertical clearance when raised, sufficient for the 1,000-foot ore carriers and 730-foot salties (ocean-going vessels) that transit the canal hundreds of times per season from April through January. The canal's origin is one of the more remarkable acts of civic insubordination in American history: it was dug in 1871 in a single 36-hour effort by Duluth citizens using picks and shovels after Superior, Wisconsin — jealous of Duluth's commercial ambitions — blocked the construction of Duluth's authorized channel; when the US Army Corps of Engineers arrived to order the ditch filled, the Duluth ditch had already become permanent fact, and Congress eventually legalized it.

Chester Congdon hired Duluth architect Clarence Johnston to build a 38-room Jacobean Revival country estate on 7.7 acres of Lake Superior shoreline between 1905 and 1908, and the result was the finest private residence ever built on the shores of the Great Lakes — a statement of iron-mining wealth so comprehensive that it included a formal garden, greenhouse, stable complex, laundry building, and boathouse, all of them still intact and restored to their Edwardian period character. Congdon had made his fortune as an attorney representing iron mining interests on the Mesabi Range in northeastern Minnesota and later as a direct investor in the mines themselves; the Range's iron ore, carried by rail to Duluth and loaded onto lake freighters for shipment to the steel mills of Pittsburgh and Gary, funded Glensheen's every extravagance. Guided tours move through 22 period-furnished rooms including the dining room set for a 1908 dinner party, the children's nursery with original toys, and Chester Congdon's private study lined with his original books. The house entered national consciousness in 1977 when Elisabeth Congdon — Chester's last surviving child, then 83 years old and bedridden — was murdered along with her night nurse Velma Pietila; the subsequent trials of her daughter's husband Roger Caldwell and daughter Marjorie Caldwell produced some of the most complex and closely followed criminal proceedings in Minnesota history, and the case remains one of the defining events of 20th-century Minnesota crime.

The free Army Corps of Engineers museum at the canal entry documents 150 years of Great Lakes commercial shipping through ship models, navigation instruments, historic charts, and the centerpiece Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit — the 729-foot Great Lakes freighter that sank in a catastrophic November 1975 storm on Lake Superior with all 29 crew members lost, the deadliest Great Lakes shipwreck of the 20th century. Recovered artifacts from the wreck are on display alongside the ship's bell, which was brought to the surface during a 1995 dive expedition and returned to the museum as a memorial to the crew; Gordon Lightfoot's 1976 ballad, which entered the song into permanent cultural memory, plays in the exhibit space. The viewing platform above the museum is the best legal public position for photographing ore carriers and salties as they thread the narrow ship canal beneath the lifted Lift Bridge, a transit that requires remarkable navigational precision given that the largest vessels have less than a foot of clearance on each side.

The August Fitger Brewing Company operated from 1857 until 1972 on a Superior Street hillside site overlooking Lake Superior — 115 years of Duluth beer history that made Fitger's the longest-running commercial brewery in Minnesota before Prohibition and postwar consolidation combined to end its run. The sandstone and brick complex, built in phases between the 1880s and 1910s, was converted beginning in 1984 into a hotel, restaurant, retail, and entertainment complex while preserving the original brew tower, the 19th-century lagering caves dug into the hillside, and the fermenting house with its original tile floors and brick arches. The Brewhouse restaurant continues brewing on-site with house lagers that reference the original Fitger's recipes, and the complex's walkways and galleries connect buildings that were once separate links in the brewing chain, now repurposed in ways that preserve the industrial logic of the original layout.

Minnesota's oldest operating lighthouse, built in 1892, guards the entry to Agate Bay at Two Harbors where iron ore pellets from the Mesabi Range are loaded onto lake freighters for shipment to steel mills in Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania — a function the bay has served continuously since the Duluth and Iron Range Railway reached Two Harbors in 1884 and made it the first ore-shipping port on Minnesota's North Shore. The lighthouse was constructed of red brick by the US Lighthouse Board and sits on a rocky point above the bay, its fixed red light visible 14 miles out on the open lake. The Light Station Bed & Breakfast occupies the attached keeper's quarters — the only lighthouse B&B in Minnesota — offering an overnight experience inside an active light station that has maintained a continuous Coast Guard presence for over 130 years. The fog signal building, the oil house that stored the kerosene fuel for the light, and the original boat house are all intact on the grounds; a walking path leads to the edge of the ore dock where 1,000-foot self-unloading freighters tie up, the scale of the vessels beside the 1892 lighthouse producing one of the more striking juxtapositions of industrial time on the North Shore.

Lake Superior agates are banded chalcedony stones — a form of microcrystalline quartz — colored deep red, orange, and yellow by iron oxide that infiltrated gas pockets in ancient volcanic lava flows approximately 1.1 billion years ago during the Midcontinent Rift. The agates were later transported and rounded by glacial action, distributed through the glacial till of the western Lake Superior basin, and now wash out of the gravel beaches of the North Shore after every storm. Agate City has been the premier destination for finding, identifying, and purchasing Lake Superior agates since 1945, and the owners are recognized as expert identifiers — a critical service given that many beach finds require professional confirmation. The shop's collection of cut and polished agates reveals the intricate parallel banding patterns that form within each stone, the iron-rich bands alternating with clearer silica in arrangements as individual as a fingerprint, making Lake Superior agates among the most prized lapidary specimens in North America and the official Minnesota state gemstone.

The Gooseberry River drops through five distinct waterfalls — Upper Falls, Middle Falls, Lower Falls, Fifth Falls, and the river-mouth cascade where the river meets Lake Superior — in the space of a half-mile, making Gooseberry the most concentrated waterfall sequence on the North Shore and one of the most dramatic short walks in Minnesota. The park is the most-visited state park on the North Shore and among the most-visited in all of Minnesota, drawing hikers, photographers, and families drawn by the combination of falling water, basalt geology, and lake access in a single compact trail system. The basalt rock formations along the river trace back 1.1 billion years to the Midcontinent Rift — the same massive volcanic event responsible for the pothole geology at Taylors Falls and the copper deposits of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula — and the dark columns of lava-cooled rock give the river's plunge pools a dramatic, almost lunar quality. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail runs along the lake shore past a cobble beach of perfectly rounded basalt stones, each one smoothed by centuries of wave action from a lake so large it generates its own weather systems.
