Long Island East End: Montauk Lighthouse, Hither Hills & Shelter Island
The East End of Long Island holds some of the finest coastal landscape in the Mid-Atlantic — Montauk Point's lighthouse and cliffs, Hither Hills State Park's 'walking dunes,' and the Shelter Island Nature Conservancy Mashomack Preserve on an island accessible only by ferry. These are the places that existed before the Hamptons.

Hither Hills State Park — Walking Dunes
A 1,755-acre state park in the Napeague Harbor area between East Hampton and Montauk, with a unique 'walking dunes' formation — parabolic dunes 80 feet high that migrate inland at 3 feet per year, burying and then revealing a pitch pine forest. The ghost forest of dead pine trunks emerging from the dune face is one of the strangest natural landscapes in New York. The 3-mile loop trail crosses active dune and the submerged forest.

Montauk Point Lighthouse
★ 4.7The oldest lighthouse in New York, built in 1796 by order of George Washington — the 110-foot tower stands on the bluff above the sea cliffs at the extreme east end of Long Island, with views of the open Atlantic, Block Island Sound, and Rhode Island on clear days. The lighthouse is still an active Coast Guard aid to navigation; the museum in the keeper's cottage traces 200 years of Montauk maritime history.
