Princeton & Delaware & Raritan Canal Towpath

The Princeton campus tour begins at Nassau Hall (1756), the oldest building on campus and the temporary capital of the United States in 1783, passes through the Collegiate Gothic core built by Ralph Adams Cram between 1906 and 1929, and ends at the 1928 University Chapel — the fourth-largest collegiate Gothic chapel in the world, with medieval stained glass donated by Hugh Jadwin and the stone floor of the crossing worn smooth by 95 years of student traffic.

A Collegiate Gothic museum building holding 115,000 objects — one of the most significant university art collections in the US, with particular strength in American painting (major Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, and Mary Cassatt holdings), ancient Mediterranean art, and Chinese painting. The museum expanded in 2023 with a new wing doubling the gallery space; admission is always free.

The white clapboard house at 112 Mercer Street where Albert Einstein lived from 1936 until his death in 1955 is not open to the public, but the exterior is freely viewable and the context — a quiet residential street near the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study — explains why Einstein chose Princeton over any world capital. The Institute for Advanced Study, where Einstein worked, is 2 miles south on Einstein Drive.

A 70-mile linear state park along the 1834 Delaware & Raritan Canal towpath, with a flat gravel trail running from Frenchtown to New Brunswick through the agricultural heartland of central New Jersey. The 5-mile section from Princeton to Kingston passes through a landscape of canal locks, stone lock-keeper's houses, and mature sycamores that shade the towpath from the summer sun.
