Western Route 66 — Clinton, Elk City & the Mother Road
West of Oklahoma City, old U.S. 66 runs straight and true through the wheat and red dirt of western Oklahoma, and no state claims a longer surviving stretch of the Mother Road. This two-day journey celebrates that heritage. Day one heads west to Clinton and the acclaimed Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, whose walk-through decades tell the story of the highway's rise, then follows the old alignment past Weatherford and toward Cheyenne country, with its ghosts of Dust Bowl migration and midcentury road culture. Oklahoma Route 66 Museum
★ 4.7Widely regarded as the finest Route 66 museum in the country, the state-run Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton leads visitors on a chronological walk through the decades of the Mother Road. Each gallery immerses you in a single era — the road's Depression-era birth and the Dust Bowl exodus of the 1930s, the wartime 1940s, the neon-and-chrome heyday of the 1950s diner and drive-in, and the psychedelic 1960s — complete with restored vehicles, a diner booth, a VW microbus, and a soundtrack of period music. A curved observation deck overlooks the actual old highway. It is a superb, atmospheric introduction to why this ribbon of pavement occupies such a place in the American imagination, and the ideal first stop of the trip.

Jiggs Smokehouse
A genuine Route 66 roadside legend just off the old alignment near Clinton, Jiggs Smokehouse is a tiny log-cabin smokehouse turning out hickory-smoked ham, bacon, and jerky along with towering smoked-meat sandwiches that have drawn road-trippers for decades. There is little seating and no pretense — this is a stop-and-savor kind of place, packed with character and the smell of woodsmoke. It embodies the ramshackle, family-run roadside culture the museum down the road commemorates. Grab a sandwich and a jar of preserves for a true Mother Road lunch.

Stafford Air & Space Museum, Weatherford
★ 4.9In Weatherford, hometown of Apollo and Gemini astronaut Thomas P. Stafford, the excellent Stafford Air & Space Museum makes an unexpected and worthwhile detour from the Mother Road theme. A Smithsonian affiliate, it houses genuine spacecraft, jet aircraft, rocket engines, and artifacts from Stafford's storied career, including material connected to the Apollo-Soyuz mission he commanded. Gleaming aircraft hang from the ceiling above rows of meticulously restored engines and capsules. It is a surprisingly deep collection for a town of its size, and a fine complement to the transportation heritage of Route 66 just outside its doors.

Historic Route 66 alignment toward Cheyenne country
★ 4.7Late afternoon is the time to drive a stretch of the surviving old highway itself, tracing the original 1930s alignment as it rolls west through Foss and toward the Washita valley and Cheyenne country. Faded gas-station canopies, cottage-court motels, and painted barn advertisements punctuate the wheat fields, and the light across the red earth at day's end is a photographer's gift. This is the Dust Bowl landscape John Steinbeck's Joads fled along in The Grapes of Wrath, and the emptiness itself is the point. Amble slowly, stop often, and let the road set the pace before returning to your lodging for the night.

Both Clinton and Elk City sit right on Interstate 40 and offer clusters of dependable chain hotels — Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Best Western, and the like — most a short hop from the old highway. For a dose of Mother Road nostalgia, look for one of the restored vintage motor courts along the historic alignment, where mid-century neon still glows after dark. Elk City puts you closest to the next morning's museum complex, shaving a few miles off the second day. Either town makes an easy, comfortable base for the night.

National Route 66 & Transportation Museum
★ 4.7Elk City's sprawling museum complex is a whole campus of Mother Road heritage rather than a single building. At its heart, the National Route 66 & Transportation Museum gathers vintage automobiles, a restored filling station, a soaring Route 66 sign, and eight states' worth of highway lore under one banner. Surrounding it, the Old Town Museum complex re-creates a turn-of-the-century western Oklahoma town with a one-room schoolhouse, a chapel, a Victorian mansion, and a blacksmith shop, alongside a farm-and-ranch museum and a rodeo hall of fame. It is easy to spend a couple of hours wandering the grounds, which capture both the road and the frontier country it crossed. A photogenic and thoroughly enjoyable morning.

A longtime favorite in Elk City, Lupe's serves generous plates of Tex-Mex and traditional Mexican fare — sizzling fajitas, enchiladas, and house-made salsa — in a lively, welcoming dining room. Western Oklahoma's small towns have a deep bench of family-run Mexican kitchens, and this is among the best regarded, an easy and satisfying midday stop before the drive back east. Portions are hearty and the service is warm. Fuel up here for the run down the Sandhills and home to Oklahoma City.

Quartz Mountain & the Great Plains Country Sandhills
★ 4.6South and east of Elk City the terrain rumples into the gypsum-capped mesas and rolling sand hills that give this stretch of Great Plains Country its distinctive character. A leisurely afternoon loop through the back roads takes in the wide red-and-gold landscape, small ranching towns, and — for those with time to spare — a longer detour toward the granite dome of Quartz Mountain rising from Lake Altus-Lugert to the south. Even a short drive off the interstate rewards you with the big-sky emptiness that defines western Oklahoma.
