Brandywine Valley Weekend: Du Pont Estates, Wyeth Country & Delaware River

Pierre du Pont's 1,077-acre horticultural masterpiece is one of the great gardens of the world — a project he spent the first half of the twentieth century designing, building, and endlessly refining. The rebuilt 4-acre Conservatory (completed 2024) houses a Silver Garden, a Cascade Garden with a 30-foot living wall, and the restored Music Room where du Pont entertained guests at the Aeolian organ. Outside, the 600-jet Main Fountain Garden erupts in choreographed sequences — du Pont was obsessed with fountains and personally oversaw the hydraulic engineering. The Italian Water Garden, modeled after the Villa Gamberaia outside Florence, arranges eighteen jets and six pools in a long lawn axis. In total, more than 11,000 plant types grow on the grounds, and no two seasons offer the same experience.

The Brandywine Valley's oldest winery occupies a 1736 stone bank barn on a farm that has been in continuous agricultural use for nearly three centuries. The estate grows Vidal Blanc and Chambourcin on south-facing slopes above Brandywine Creek, and the tasting room opens onto a terrace with unobstructed views of the creek valley below — rolling hills, stone farmhouses, and woodlot edges that look almost exactly as Andrew Wyeth painted them half a mile away. The Chambourcin Reserve is the flagship, aged in American oak and consistently the most serious wine in the portfolio.

Lunch in a converted 1864 grist mill on the west bank of the Brandywine Creek — the museum's ground-floor café opens onto a glass-enclosed terrace directly above the river, where herons hunt the shallows below and the mill's original stone walls rise around the dining space. The menu leans toward seasonal American lunch fare: soups, composed salads, and sandwiches using locally sourced ingredients. Eating here before or after the Wyeth galleries provides the complete Chadds Ford experience — the mill building, the river, and the landscape that the Wyeths spent their lives rendering.

Three generations of Wyeths occupy the galleries of this 1864 grist mill on the Brandywine Creek — N.C. Wyeth's monumental illustrations for Treasure Island, Robin Hood, and The Last of the Mohicans dominate the first-floor gallery in their original frames, while Andrew Wyeth's tempera panels of Chadds Ford's farm fields and Christina's World hang in the main collection upstairs. Jamie Wyeth's hyperrealist portraits and his celebrated studies of pigs and pumpkins complete the dynastic survey. The museum's adaptive reuse of the mill's original fabric — the stone walls, timber beams, and the circular stone tower added in the 1970s — is itself a model of historic preservation, setting the art in a structure that is architecturally continuous with the landscape the Wyeths painted.

On September 11, 1777, British General Howe outmaneuvered Washington's Continental Army on these 52 acres of Chadds Ford farmland, inflicting 1,200 American casualties in a single day and clearing the road to Philadelphia, which fell eleven days later. Washington's Headquarters, a Quaker farmhouse where the general coordinated the defense, survives on the grounds, as does the farmhouse where the Marquis de Lafayette took command of his division. The visitor center presents the battle's tactical maps in detail — the scale of Howe's flanking maneuver, which crossed the Brandywine eight miles upstream while Knyphausen pinned the Americans at Chadds Ford, remains one of the most impressive operational movements of the Revolutionary War.

Kennett Square grows sixty percent of all mushrooms consumed in the United States — a concentration that began in the 1880s when a local florist discovered that spent mushroom compost made excellent mulch and began cultivating the crop as a side business. Several farms on the outskirts of the borough offer tours of the growing houses, where a dozen varieties are produced in carefully climate-controlled darkness. The borough's compact downtown is lined with independent shops, galleries, and the Kennett Brewing Company, which occupies a renovated 1930s garage and pours a range of ales and lagers including a mushroom stout brewed with locally grown shiitake that is either wonderful or alarming depending on your expectations.

Henry Francis du Pont spent the first half of the twentieth century assembling what is now the world's finest collection of American decorative arts — 90,000 objects made or used in America between 1640 and 1860, arranged in 175 period room settings inside a nine-story country mansion that grew incrementally as the collection outpaced the available space. Newport furniture, Philadelphia silver, Pennsylvania Germanic fraktur, and New England pewter fill galleries that recreate the domestic environments of eighteenth and early nineteenth-century America with a completeness unmatched anywhere else. The Port Royal Parlor contains the finest surviving Philadelphia Chippendale furniture; the Cecil Bedroom's original Baltimore painted furniture is the definitive example of that distinctive regional style. Three-hour guided tours cover the principal rooms but leave dozens of galleries unexplored — plan to return.

Henry Francis du Pont designed sixty acres of naturalistic garden on the Winterthur estate between 1902 and 1951 — a lifetime project in which he applied the same collecting obsession to plant material that he brought to American furniture. The Sundial Garden is a formal parterre of clipped boxwood; the March Walk is a long allée lined with thousands of Cornus mas and March Bank Azaleas that bloom in waves from late March through May; the Enchanted Woods children's garden conceals a faerie cottage, a troll bridge, and a reflecting pool among eight-foot plantings. The spring ephemerals — trout lily, Virginia bluebells, and bloodroot — peak in April along the Quarry Garden walk, where the natural topography of an old quarry has been planted to a continuous sequence of bloom.

The original DuPont black powder mills on the Brandywine Creek, established in 1802 by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont after he fled Revolutionary France, constitute one of the most complete industrial heritage sites in the United States. The 235-acre riverside campus preserves the entire production chain — the worker's community of stone cottages, the powder yards where the explosive meal was pressed into grains between iron rollers, the stone-arched machine shop, and the Eleutherian Mills mansion where five generations of du Ponts lived close enough to their workers to share the risk of explosion. The mills' location on the Brandywine was not incidental: the falls provided reliable water power, and the creek's narrow gorge walls would contain any explosion rather than transmitting it outward. Water-powered machinery still runs on demonstration days, and the tram connects the main exhibits to the upper powder yards along the original millrace.

Wilmington's principal art museum holds two collections of national significance under one roof: the finest assemblage of Pre-Raphaelite art outside England — paintings, drawings, and decorative objects by Millais, Rossetti, Burne-Jones, and Hunt that entered the collection through a bequest in 1935 — and a major holding of Howard Pyle illustrations. Pyle taught at the Brandywine School in Wilmington at the turn of the twentieth century and trained the generation of illustrators who created the visual language of American popular publishing: N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, and Frank Schoonover all studied under him, making this museum the intellectual origin point of the Wyeth tradition encountered at the Brandywine River Museum the previous day.
