The Pacific Biological Laboratories building (Ed Ricketts's research station, Steinbeck's 'Doc's Lab') is a California Historical Landmark; the interior is preserved as Ricketts left it in 1948.

Opened in 1984 in the former Hovden Cannery building, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was the first aquarium to display living kelp forest — a 28-foot-tall tank visible from three floors. The Open Sea gallery houses bluefin tuna, ocean sunfish, and green sea turtles in a tank holding 1.2 million gallons; the sea otter exhibit has operated since the aquarium's opening with otters rescued from the surrounding coastline. The aquarium's Seafood Watch program, begun in 1999, is the most widely used sustainable seafood guide in the US.

The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Pacific Grove protects the eucalyptus grove where 25,000–50,000 overwintering monarch butterflies cluster on the trees from October through February. Pacific Grove has protected the monarchs since 1938 (the year it became illegal to harm them in the city, with a $500 fine). The butterflies travel up to 2,500 miles from the Rocky Mountain breeding grounds; the overwintering colonies on the California coast are the only known monarchs to make this migration.
