Russian River Wine Country, Bodega Bay & the Sonoma Coast

Healdsburg's restored 1857 Spanish plaza is ringed by tasting rooms, restaurants, and boutiques in Victorian commercial buildings — a walkable concentration of food and wine culture. The Saturday farmers market (year-round, 8 AM–noon) represents the Russian River Valley's organic farming community with berry, mushroom, stone-fruit, and vegetable vendors from the surrounding watershed. The plaza's morning coffee culture (Costeaux French Bakery on Healdsburg Avenue) is the best in Sonoma County outside the city.

The most influential winery in the Russian River Valley — Burt Williams and Ed Selyem built their reputation from a garage in 1981 and produced the Pinot Noir that established the Russian River Valley as a world-class wine appellation. The winery moved to its current location in Eastside Road in 2012; the allocation-only mailing list has a 15-year wait, but the tasting room accepts walk-in visits for current releases. The Rochioli Vineyard Pinot Noir is the wine that changed California Pinot Noir.

A hilltop winery on the Russian River's Westside Road with a terrace tasting room overlooking the Russian River Valley floor and the surrounding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards. Gary Farrell left Williams Selyem to establish his own label in 2004; the current winery continues his single-vineyard style. The Russian River Valley floor visible from the terrace is the flattest section of the valley — the morning fog channel that defines the appellation's cool climate is visible as a daily marine layer.

A 805-acre old-growth coast redwood preserve 2 miles north of Guerneville, protecting the Colonel Armstrong Tree (1,400 years old, 310 feet tall) and a dozen comparable specimens in a sheltered canyon. The park's 2.4-mile Pioneer Trail connects the old-growth core to the surrounding second-growth buffer; the morning light filtering through the redwood canopy in the first hour after dawn is among the most atmospheric natural phenomena in the Bay Area. The park's thermal inversions mean the canyon can be 10–15°F cooler than Guerneville in summer.

A 1-mile walking path from the Bodega Head parking area traverses coastal bluffs above the harbor seal colony (300+ animals year-round on the rocks below) and the gray whale migration corridor (December through April, 18,000 gray whales passing within a mile of the headland). The head protects Bodega Bay from the northwest swell; the views north along the Sonoma coast extend to the Point Arena lighthouse 40 miles distant on clear days.

A restaurant in the village of Bodega, 4 miles inland from the bay and beneath the famous schoolhouse that appeared in Hitchcock's The Birds. The kitchen uses local Sonoma Coast produce and the Bodega Bay fishing fleet's catch — a casual and genuine country restaurant with no connection to the Hollywood association of the surrounding town.

The mouth of the Russian River at Goat Rock Beach is the most important harbor seal pupping site on the Sonoma coast — 300+ harbor seals haul out on the sandbars at the river mouth from March through August, with pups born from March through May. The beach is closed to within 50 yards of the colony during pupping season; docents are stationed at the perimeter. Goat Rock itself, an offshore sea stack connected to the mainland by a gravel bar at low tide, is accessible from the south beach and provides views north along the Sonoma coast.

A Sonoma County park on the sandspit that separates Bodega Bay from the Pacific, with a wide tidal flat at the bay side (productive for shorebirds) and a Pacific beach on the ocean side. The park's campground is directly on the bay; the afternoon light in the cove is warm and protected from the coastal wind by the surrounding hills.
