Lowcountry Grand Relaxed Tour: Beaufort, Hunting Island & Bluffton

The 1804 Federal-style Verdier House on Bay Street is the best single-building introduction to Beaufort's remarkable history. Built for merchant John Mark Verdier at the height of the Sea Island cotton boom, it served as a Union Army headquarters after 1861 and now operates as a thoroughly interpreted museum. The guided tours — typically 45 minutes — cover not only the architectural splendor of the Federal-style house but the social world, the enslaved labor, and the dramatic historical reversals that the building has witnessed.

The Old Point neighborhood — a peninsula of Federal-era and antebellum houses set under live oak canopies above the Beaufort River — is the heart of Beaufort's architectural heritage. A self-guided walk along Bay Street, Craven Street, and the river-facing blocks of the Old Point passes more than 50 pre-Civil War houses in remarkable condition, most of them still private residences. The combination of the architecture, the live oaks, the river light, and the general air of a place that has been lived in and cared for across many generations creates an atmosphere found in very few American towns.

The Beaufort Waterfront Park at the foot of Bay Street, built on the site of former cotton wharves, is the finest public waterfront space in the Lowcountry: a wide, grassy esplanade facing the broad tidal Beaufort River, with benches, shade trees, and a view of the river estuary and its maze of islands and marsh channels. Dolphins are regularly visible in the channel in the late afternoon. The park connects to the Bay Street commercial district and provides the easiest access to Beaufort's river-facing restaurant row.

The 1875 Hunting Island Lighthouse is the only publicly climbable lighthouse in South Carolina, and the 167-step climb is worth every step. The lighthouse is historically remarkable: it was designed with a modular cast-iron structure specifically so it could be disassembled and relocated, and indeed was moved 1.25 miles inland in 1889 as the beach eroded beneath the original site — a remarkable piece of adaptive engineering that foresaw the coastal erosion challenges that now threaten barrier island infrastructure across the Southeast. The view from the lantern gallery reaches north across St. Helena Sound to the ACE Basin wilderness — one of the largest undeveloped estuarine systems on the East Coast — and south along the barrier island chain to Fripp Island and beyond. The keeper's cottage at the base documents the lives of the lighthouse keepers and their families who maintained this remote light station.

Hunting Island's 5.5 miles of Atlantic beach are among the most undeveloped on the East Coast — no beach chairs for rent, no food vendors, no hotels visible from the waterline. A midday on this beach with a book, a packed lunch, and nowhere to be is the kind of experience that reminds you what beaches are actually for. The maritime forest behind the beach provides shade for a post-swim break, and the freshwater lagoon boardwalk nearby is excellent for birding.

An afternoon visit to Penn Center on St. Helena Island provides the cultural and historical context that Hunting Island's natural beauty leaves implicit. Founded in 1862 as one of the first schools for freed African Americans in the South, Penn Center is also where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. held strategic planning retreats in the early 1960s. The York W. Bailey Museum is small but excellent, and the campus grounds — live oaks, 19th-century brick buildings, the Brick Church cemetery — are deeply peaceful in the late afternoon.

The Church of the Cross, completed in 1857 on its bluff above the May River, is one of the most beautiful small Gothic Revival churches in the American South: board-and-batten wood construction with pointed arched windows, a simple but perfectly proportioned exterior, and a churchyard under enormous live oaks whose branches extend over the graves of people who worshipped here in the antebellum period. The church was one of two buildings in Bluffton that survived the Union burning of July 1863, and it remains an active Episcopal parish. The interior, particularly in morning light when the sun comes through the colored glass of the lancet windows, is serene and beautiful.

The Bluffton Oyster Company on Wharf Street is the last working oyster shucking house on the May River — a weathered waterfront operation selling wild-harvested May River cluster oysters directly from the tidal dock. The May River oysters are distinctively briny with a mineral quality that reflects the specific estuary chemistry of the river, and eating them here — steamed over a wood fire in the traditional Lowcountry roast style, or raw on a dock picnic table with the river breeze and the shuckers working ten feet away — is as close to the original Lowcountry oyster experience as any visitor can have in the 21st century.

A final afternoon in Bluffton Old Town: the Heyward House Museum (one of only two buildings surviving the 1863 burning, now an antebellum house museum and visitor center) and a browse through the independent galleries and antique shops along Calhoun Street. The art here is predominantly Lowcountry landscape and wildlife — marsh scenes, herons, shrimp boats, the particular quality of Lowcountry light over open water — and the antique shops occasionally yield extraordinary finds from Lowcountry estate collections.
