An hour east of Rapid City, the short-grass prairie hides one of the most consequential landscapes of the twentieth century. For three decades, a thousand Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles stood on alert beneath these ranchlands, each capable of leveling a city on a few minutes' notice — and the fields looked like ordinary pasture.
