Granite Dome & Hill Country Summit

The summit trail is 1.4 miles round-trip with a 425-foot elevation gain across bare pink granite — Precambrian rock formed 1 billion years ago. The dome is so large it creates its own micro-climate: at night it retains heat and groans audibly as it cools, a phenomenon the Tonkawa people considered sacred. Start before 9am to beat the heat and secure parking; the park reaches capacity by mid-morning on weekends.

The Pedernales River crosses a broad limestone shelf, then drops in a series of jagged falls into a canyon below — in normal flow, hikers can walk on the exposed rock formation and stand at the falls' edge. The Twin Falls trail is 7.5 miles of riverside terrain through cedar and live oak. Afternoon swimming in the pools downstream from the falls is the standard Hill Country reward after a morning on granite.
