Gorman Falls & the Colorado Bend

Colorado Bend State Park hides the most dramatic waterfall in Central Texas at the end of a 3-mile round-trip trail through cedar canyons. Day two adds Inks Lake for kayaking and cliff jumping above water so clear you can count fish from the surface.

The Gorman Falls trail is 3 miles round-trip through juniper canyon to a moss-covered travertine waterfall that drops 65 feet into a pool surrounded by maidenhair fern and columbine — one of the most botanically rich spots in the Hill Country. Travertine formations take centuries to build; the mineral-rich spring water creates new rock as you watch. Arrive early as the trailhead lot fills by 10am on weekends.

This is the lunch stop for the day — a legendary rural Texas anomaly in the village of Bend (population: about 100) that has been serving burgers, ice cream, and cold drinks since the 1950s. The peach shakes are made from local Stonewall peaches in season. The kind of place that reminds you why back-road Texas is worth the extra miles.

Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que
Cooper's in Llano is the original of the Cooper's chain and the restaurant that put Central Texas mesquite-smoked BBQ on the national map. You choose your meat from the open pit out front — cowboy ribeye, pork chops, brisket, jalapeño sausage — before paying by weight inside. Mesquite smoke and a quart of cold Shiner on the screened porch is the right end to a canyon day.

Llano, TX — Badu House
A limestone hotel in a historic 1891 bank building in downtown Llano, on the Llano River. The Badu House is a genuine Hill Country artifact — the original bank vault is still in the lobby — and the surrounding Llano River swimming holes are five minutes away.

Inks Lake is a constant-level Highland Lakes reservoir fed by Inks Dam, with water so clear the granite boulders are visible 15 feet down. The Blue Hole is a swimming area among large pink granite outcroppings with a natural rope-swing cliff. The 7.2-mile Inks Lake Trail circuits the park through varied terrain — granite slopes, cedar forest, and creek drainages — with lake views throughout.

The most popular swimming spot at Inks Lake is a slot between granite boulders where a small waterfall spills into a deep pool — locals call it Devil's Waterhole. Kayak rentals are available at the park's camp store; paddling the lake's irregular granite shoreline for an hour reveals dozens of coves inaccessible by trail.

Blue Bonnet Cafe
Blue Bonnet Cafe
A Marble Falls institution since 1929 — the Blue Bonnet Cafe serves honest Texas breakfast and pie all day from a low-slung building on US-281. The coconut meringue pie has a separate fan following from the regular breakfast crowd, and the chicken-fried steak is made with tenderized round and white gravy that has not changed since the Eisenhower era.
