Fredericksburg: German Hill Country & the Pacific War Museum

The most comprehensive Pacific Theater museum in the United States is in Fredericksburg because Admiral Chester Nimitz, who commanded all Allied forces in the Pacific, was born here. The museum grew from Nimitz's birthplace hotel through four major expansions — the George H.W. Bush Gallery, the Pacific Combat Zone (a re-created outdoor battlefield), and the Japanese Garden of Peace donated by the Japanese government. Budget three hours minimum for the permanent galleries alone.

Fredericksburg's Hauptstrasse (Main Street) retains the original 1846 German town plan — over 100 distinctive limestone and half-timber buildings survive, many now operating as shops and restaurants. Among the most historically interesting are the Sunday Houses: small secondary residences in Fredericksburg built by German farming families who lived too far from town to make the trip daily — they'd stay in these compact townhouses on Saturday nights to attend church Sunday morning. The Pioneer Museum on West Main preserves three original Sunday Houses and the Old Fassel House.

Fredericksburg German cuisine without the tourist-restaurant shortcuts — house-made spatzle, slow-braised sauerbraten, pork schnitzel with proper jäger sauce, and a German beer list that goes beyond what the bigger Hauptstrasse spots carry. Tucked off Main Street, the quiet dining room fills with locals and serious Hill Country regulars.

The smallest city in Texas — three original buildings (1849 general store, post office, and dance hall), a live oak yard, and enough Texas music mythology to fill a career. Willie Nelson's 'Luckenbach Texas (Back to the Basics of Life)' with Waylon Jennings made the tiny community a household name in 1977, but the music scene started in the 1960s when Hondo Crouch bought the ghost town for $30,000. Sunday afternoons bring acoustic picking circles; Saturday evenings have ticketed shows.

A decommissioned 1913 railroad tunnel 3 miles south of Fredericksburg shelters between 1 and 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats — the colony moves from the caves of central Mexico to Texas each March and departs by October. The nightly emergence at dusk is one of the great wildlife spectacles in Texas: the column of bats spirals upward from the tunnel mouth for 20 to 30 minutes as the colony clears the vegetation and ascends into the feeding altitude.

The finest collection of Western American art in Texas — paintings and sculpture by Remington, Russell, and their successors, with a particular strength in the contemporary Texas realist movement that emerged from the Kerrville folk and cowboy painting traditions. The museum building, designed to evoke a Spanish mission, sits on a bluff above the Guadalupe River.

The Guadalupe runs through Kerrville's downtown park with limestone bluffs on one side and manicured lawns on the other — a rare combination of natural Hill Country character and urban amenity. The riverfront restaurants and the walking path along the bank make this the most pleasant city park along the Guadalupe's upper reach.

A 500-acre city park on the Guadalupe with 7 miles of hiking trails through cedar-elm woodland and limestone outcroppings above the river. The park hosts the Kerrville Folk Festival every Memorial Day weekend — the longest-running acoustic music festival in North America, held continuously since 1972. Outside festival season it is one of the quietest and most scenic riverside parks in the Hill Country.
