New Braunfels, Gruene & Fredericksburg: German Texas River Towns

The oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas (Gruene Hall, 1878) still hosts live acts Saturday and Sunday afternoons; the surrounding 1890s commercial district is the best-preserved 19th-century German Texan community in the state. The cotton gin, general store, and hotel are still in their original buildings.

The Enchante (Mourvèdre-Grenache blend) and the Mary Ruth white are the standout bottles; the tasting room overlooks the estate vineyard with views of the surrounding cedar hills.

Texas's oldest brewpub — the Fredericksburg Brewing Company has been making German-style lagers in a historic Main Street building since 1994, two decades before craft beer arrived in Texas Hill Country. The Pedernales Pilsner and the Hill Country Hefeweizen are the house mainstays; the biergarten in back is the right spot for a midday pint after a morning of wine tasting.

The largest tasting terrace on the Texas Wine Trail sits above Grape Creek's estate vineyard with views of the surrounding cedar-juniper hills. Grape Creek produces 20 varietals including a Cabernet Sauvignon from estate fruit; the Trellis Terrace has food service with charcuterie and flatbread pairings most afternoons.
