San Antonio in a Day: Missions, River Walk & the Pearl

The grandest of the four UNESCO San Antonio missions, completed in 1782 and still an active parish. The Rose Window on the south sacristy wall is considered the finest example of Spanish Colonial baroque stonework in North America — a single mestizo craftsman named Pedro Huízar carved it over several years. The granary walls and the fortified perimeter reflect the missions' dual function as religious and military outposts on the colonial frontier.

The Pearl Brewery opened in 1883 on the San Antonio River and closed in 2001 — the adaptive reuse of the former brewery complex into a 22-acre mixed-use district with restaurants, the Hotel Emma, the CIA culinary school, and the Saturday farmers market is the best example of historic industrial conversion in Texas. The brewmaster's house, the brew tower, and the original limestone caves are all intact and incorporated into the development.

French-leaning brasserie cuisine in the Hotel Emma's ground-floor restaurant, serving soups, charcuterie, and composed plates sourced from the CIA culinary school's network of Texas producers. The space occupies the former brewmaster's residence inside the Pearl complex, with original wooden floors and exposed limestone walls.

The 1836 siege that killed 189 defenders over 13 days became the founding myth of Texas independence — what is less appreciated is the mission's history before the battle. Misión San Antonio de Valero was founded in 1718, abandoned in 1793, and repurposed as a garrison for the Alamo de Parras cavalry company, which gave it the name that stuck. The church walls standing today are the same walls Travis, Bowie, and Crockett died defending.

The King William neighborhood south of downtown is the most intact Victorian residential district in San Antonio — German merchant families built limestone mansions along the river bend in the 1870s and 1880s. The architecture ranges from Italianate to Second Empire; the streets are shaded and quiet. The River Walk segment through King William avoids the tourist crush of downtown and connects to the Blue Star Arts Complex.

John Besh's brasserie in the historic St. Anthony Hotel serves elevated Louisiana-Southern cuisine — Gulf oysters, fried chicken, and duck confit — in a grand dining room that honors San Antonio's French and German colonial heritage. One of the most sophisticated dinners in the city.
