A steep, slow, and spectacular mountain road climbs roughly 6,000 vertical feet out of Riggins to the Heaven's Gate Lookout at 8,400 feet in the Seven Devils Mountains — one of the great overlooks of the American West. From a short walk above the parking area, the view on a clear day reaches into four states, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Montana, across the immense trench of Hells Canyon fully a mile and a half deep below, with the jagged Seven Devils peaks at your back. The final miles are narrow, unpaved, and often not passable until midsummer once the snow clears, so check road status before you go and drive it in the morning before afternoon clouds and haze roll in. The air is thin and cool at the top even in July; bring a layer.

Seven Devils Ridgeline Walk

From near the lookout, short trails run out along the ridgeline and into the high basins of the Seven Devils, offering an easy way to stretch the Hells Canyon views into a real walk without committing to the area's longer backcountry loops. Rapid River Trail

Back down at valley level just south of Riggins, the Rapid River offers a gentle, shaded finale after the exposed heights of the morning. The trail follows the clear, tumbling river upstream from the fish hatchery into a narrow canyon, an easy and mostly flat path along the water past pools, small cascades, and cottonwood shade that runs as far as you care to walk. The lower river is a designated Wild and Scenic stream and a key salmon and steelhead spawning ground, and the hatchery at the trailhead is worth a quick look. It is a cool, low-effort way to wind down before the drive south — carry water and turn back when the afternoon starts running out.
