Kuna & the Snake River — Birds of Prey, Petroglyphs & the Canyon Rim

Just forty minutes south of Boise, the high desert drops away into the Snake River Canyon at the heart of the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area — the densest concentration of nesting raptors in North America. This unhurried day loops out through the farm town of Kuna to Swan Falls Dam, the oldest hydroelectric dam on the Snake, where prairie falcons, golden eagles, and hawks ride the canyon thermals along the basalt cliffs. It pairs the raw geology and wildlife of the canyon with Celebration Park, Idaho's only archaeological park, where thousand-year-old petroglyphs are pecked into the melon-gravel boulders left behind by the Ice Age Bonneville Flood. A relaxed Kuna lunch anchors the middle of the day, and the trip closes with golden-hour light spilling across the canyon rim before the easy drive home.
