Olean & the Enchanted Mountains — Sculpture Fields & Rock Cities

Ninety minutes south of Buffalo, near the Pennsylvania line, the Enchanted Mountains around Olean hide two of the strangest and most rewarding walks in the Northeast — one made by an artist, one made by geology. Day one wanders Griffis Sculpture Park, where hundreds of monumental steel and bronze figures rise from open meadows and forest across hundreds of hilltop acres, one of the oldest and largest sculpture parks in the country and a place made for exploring on foot. Day two moves to Rock City Park, a labyrinth of house-sized quartz-conglomerate boulders — a 'rock city' formed from an ancient seabed and split into towering canyons and passages you squeeze and scramble through. Both are hands-on, walkable, and unlike anything closer to the city. Wear sturdy shoes for the sculpture-park hills and the rock-city crevices, and give yourself time to get lost in both.

Founded in 1966 by sculptor Larry Griffis Jr., Griffis Sculpture Park is one of the oldest and largest sculpture parks in the United States, sprawling across more than four hundred hilltop acres with some ten miles of trails. Hundreds of large-scale works in steel, bronze, and iron — towering figures, insects, abstract forms, and whimsical creatures — rise straight from the meadows and woods, meant to be touched, climbed on, and discovered around each bend. Start in the open Mill Valley section, where the fields are studded with the park's most iconic monumental figures against the backdrop of the Enchanted Mountains. It is a genuinely magical place to wander, equal parts art gallery and playground.

High on a ridge south of Olean, Rock City Park preserves the largest exposure of quartz-conglomerate boulders in the world — a 'rock city' of house-sized stone blocks that were once an ancient seabed, cemented into hard rock and later split apart into a maze of towering canyons and narrow passages. A marked trail winds among and between the boulders, over three hundred million years in the making, letting you squeeze through crevices, scramble up to overlook ledges, and stand at the base of walls fifty feet high. Interpretive signs explain the geology and the site's long human history as a Seneca lookout. Wear grippy shoes and be ready to climb and duck; this is a hands-on landscape.
