Presque Isle & the Erie Lakeshore

Two days on Pennsylvania's only stretch of Great Lakes shoreline, built around Presque Isle State Park — a curving sandspit peninsula that arcs seven miles into Lake Erie to enclose Presque Isle Bay and the city of Erie. Day one explores the peninsula itself: its chain of guarded beaches, the historic Presque Isle Lighthouse, and the multi-use trail and lagoons that make it Pennsylvania's most-visited state park and a birding hotspot of national note. Day two moves inland and out again — the Tom Ridge Environmental Center for the peninsula's story and its observation tower, a bay cruise on the water, and the wilder shale bluffs and beaches of Erie Bluffs State Park to the west — before the drive home. An overnight in Erie or on the bay bridges the two days. It is a lakeshore-and-beach weekend with plenty of flat, easy walking, wide water views in every direction, and the singular geography of a sandspit that wraps a whole bay around itself.

Presque Isle Beaches & Gull Point

Presque Isle is a sandspit peninsula curving seven miles into Lake Erie, and its Lake-side shore is a nearly continuous run of soft sand beaches — the finest freshwater beaches in Pennsylvania. The numbered beaches offer guarded swimming and long stretches for walking, while the wilder eastern tip at Gull Point is a protected natural area and one of the premier bird-migration stopovers on the Great Lakes. A morning here means barefoot beach walking with the open lake on one side and the sheltered bay on the other. Start at the western beaches and work east as the day warms.

Presque Isle Lighthouse
4.7
Built in 1873 and still standing among the dunes on the peninsula's Lake Erie shore, the Presque Isle Lighthouse is one of the park's landmarks and a photogenic focal point midway around the loop. The trim white tower and keeper's house sit just back from a quiet beach, with interpretive signs on the peninsula's maritime history and the lighthouse keepers who lived here. It is a fine, easy stop to pair with a short beach walk, and a natural place to pause before lunch.

Sara's Restaurant — Presque Isle Gateway
A cheerful 1950s-style drive-in at the very entrance to Presque Isle, Sara's is an Erie institution famous for its Smith's hot dogs, hand-dipped Perry's ice cream, and lakeside patio painted in retro seaside colors. It is the classic beach-day lunch stop, packed with families in summer and squarely in the spirit of a Great Lakes shore outing. Grab a dog and a cone and eat at the outdoor tables before continuing around the peninsula.

Presque Isle Multi-Purpose Trail & Lagoons
4.8
The paved 13.5-mile multi-purpose trail loops the entire peninsula, and the network of inner trails threads the wooded ridges, ponds, and lagoons that make up Presque Isle's surprisingly rich interior. The Sidewalk Trail and the lagoons offer flat, shady walking through a mosaic of dunes, marsh, and cottonwood forest, with abundant birdlife and quiet water views away from the beach crowds. Kayak and paddleboat rentals on the lagoons are an option in season. It is an easy, varied afternoon of walking that showcases the peninsula's ecological range before settling into Erie for the night.

Erie Bayfront Lodging
The city of Erie sits directly across the bay from Presque Isle and offers the full range of overnight options, with the redeveloped bayfront the most scenic choice. The Sheraton Erie Bayfront and the Courtyard by Marriott sit on the water near the Bicentennial Tower and the cruise docks, within minutes of both the peninsula and tomorrow's Tom Ridge Center. Chain hotels along the Peninsula Drive gateway offer additional, budget-friendly options close to the park entrance.

At the gateway to Presque Isle, the Tom Ridge Environmental Center is a striking modern building housing exhibits on the peninsula's geology, ecology, and shifting sands, plus a big-screen theater and aquaria of Lake Erie life. Its 75-foot glass observation tower is the highlight — an elevator ride to a panoramic view over the whole peninsula, the bay, the city, and the open lake beyond. It is the ideal orienting start to day two, tying together everything seen on the ground the day before. Admission to the exhibits is free; the tower has a small fee.

Presque Isle Bay Cruise (Lady Kate)
4.7
A narrated sightseeing cruise on Presque Isle Bay puts you out on the water for a wholly different view of the peninsula, the Erie skyline, and the lighthouses guarding the bay's mouth. The Lady Kate and similar excursion boats depart from the Erie bayfront docks, gliding past the marinas, the ore piers, and the wooded shore of the sandspit while the captain narrates the area's shipping and natural history. It is a relaxed, scenic hour on the lake and a memorable break from walking. Reserve ahead in peak season, as sailings fill.

Oliver's Beer Garden — Erie Bayfront
An open-air waterfront eatery on the Erie bayfront with sweeping views across the bay to Presque Isle, Oliver's serves burgers, sandwiches, seafood baskets, and local brews on a breezy deck over the water. It is a lively, easygoing spot for a late lunch between the bay cruise and the drive west to Erie Bluffs. The bayfront setting, with boats coming and going and the peninsula on the horizon, makes it a fitting midday base. Seasonal and popular on sunny afternoons.

Erie Bluffs State Park
Erie Bluffs State Park
4.6
A wilder contrast to Presque Isle, Erie Bluffs State Park protects a stretch of undeveloped Lake Erie shoreline west of the city, where 90-foot shale bluffs drop to a secluded beach and Elk Creek carves its way to the lake. Trails run along the bluff-top through oak woods and rare sand-barren habitat, with dramatic overlooks of the lake and a stairway down to the quiet beach for those wanting to reach the water. It is a peaceful, natural finale — big horizons, few crowds, and a genuine sense of the lake's untamed shore before the drive back to Cleveland.
