Akron — Stan Hywet, the Art Museum & the Psychology of a City

Forty-five minutes south of Cleveland lies Akron, the city that rubber built. In the early twentieth century the fortunes of Goodyear, Firestone, and their rivals made this the tire capital of the world, and that industrial wealth left behind one of America's grandest country estates. This one-day cultural tour opens at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, the sixty-five-room Tudor Revival manor of Goodyear co-founder F.A. Seiberling, then moves downtown to the sleek Akron Art Museum and the singular National Museum of Psychology — the only museum in the country devoted to the science of the mind — before a relaxed dinner in the Highland Square neighborhood.

Stan Hywet Hall is the sixty-five-room Tudor Revival country estate built between 1912 and 1915 for Frank A. Seiberling, co-founder of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and his wife Gertrude. Its name — Old English for 'stone quarry' — nods to the abandoned quarry on the grounds, and the house remains one of the finest and largest examples of the Tudor Revival style in America, filled with original furnishings, tapestries, and a Manor House organ. The seventy acres of surrounding gardens, designed by landscape architect Warren Manning, include a birch-lined allée, walled English garden, and Japanese garden. Now a National Historic Landmark, it delivers a full morning of Gilded Age and industrial-era grandeur just minutes from downtown.

The Lockview
The Lockview
A downtown Akron favorite, The Lockview has built a devoted following on elevated grilled cheese sandwiches, a rotating craft-beer list, and a laid-back main-street atmosphere. The menu turns a nostalgic comfort food into something inventive — combinations layering local cheeses, house spreads, and seasonal add-ons — alongside soups and salads that make it an easy midday stop between the estate and the art museum. Its central location on South Main Street puts it within a short walk of the afternoon's museums.

The Akron Art Museum pairs a restored 1899 Italian Renaissance Revival building with a bold glass-and-steel addition — the 'Knight Building,' designed by the Viennese firm Coop Himmelb(l)au, whose dramatic cantilevered 'roof cloud' juts out over the sidewalk. Inside, the collection focuses on art from 1850 to the present, with particular strength in American and contemporary painting, sculpture, and photography, including works by regional and nationally significant artists. Rotating special exhibitions and an outdoor sculpture garden round out a compact, high-quality institution that rewards an hour or two. The building itself is a landmark of contemporary architecture in northeast Ohio.

Housed at the University of Akron alongside the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology, the National Museum of Psychology is the only museum in the country dedicated to the science and history of the human mind. Its galleries display original apparatus and artifacts from landmark experiments — including material connected to Stanley Milgram's obedience studies and other pivotal moments in the field — drawn from the largest archive of psychological history in the world. Interactive exhibits let visitors test perception, memory, and behavior, making an academic subject genuinely hands-on. It is a fascinating and unexpected counterpoint to the art museum next door, and a distinctly Akron cultural experience.
