Amish Country & Cuyahoga Valley: Ohio's Rural Heritage
An hour south of Cleveland, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park preserves the 33-mile river valley between Akron and Cleveland — the only national park in Ohio, and one of the most visited in the country despite its urban setting. The Towpath Trail (following the Ohio and Erie Canal towpath) and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad run through the valley; Brandywine Falls is the park's signature natural feature. Continuing east from the valley brings you into Holmes County's Amish settlement, the largest in the world — the transition from the national park's manicured nature trails to the horse-and-buggy roads of the Amish farmland is one of the most dramatic cultural contrasts in the Midwest.

Brandywine Falls
★ 4.8A 65-foot waterfall on Brandywine Creek in Cuyahoga Valley National Park — the most photographed natural feature in the park, accessible via a 1.4-mile loop trail from the parking area that includes a boardwalk above the falls and a descent to the plunge pool. ★ 4.7A 20-mile multi-use trail following the original 1827 Ohio and Erie Canal towpath through Cuyahoga Valley National Park — the flat gravel surface runs along the Cuyahoga River with canal locks, aqueducts, and lock tender houses at regular intervals. The Beaver Marsh section (between Ira and Botzum Trailheads) is the most biodiverse area: beavers dammed the former industrial canal in the 1980s, creating a wetland that now supports great blue herons, osprey, and great horned owls visible from the path.

A heritage railroad running 33 miles through Cuyahoga Valley National Park between Rockside Station and Akron — the train runs through the valley at the Towpath Trail's side, allowing passengers to ride downvalley and hike back on the towpath (or vice versa). The railroad operates vintage passenger cars on the historic Pennsylvania Railroad grade; the National Park Partnership (the train stops at multiple park trailheads) makes this one of the most unusual rail excursions in the country.

The SR 557 corridor through the heart of the Holmes County settlement — a slow drive through Charm, Farmerstown, and Mount Hope on back roads that cross the most densely settled Amish farmland in the world. The Tuesday and Friday livestock auctions at Mount Hope attract hundreds of Amish families. Lunch at Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen in Mount Hope, a cafeteria-style Amish cooking restaurant with roast chicken, noodles, mashed potatoes, and the pies that justify the detour.
