Letchworth State Park protects 17 miles of the Genesee River gorge, where the water drops over three major waterfalls between cliffs up to 600 feet high — the reason it is called the Grand Canyon of the East and was voted the best state park in the country. Mount Morris Dam & Overlook

At the northern end of the park the Genesee gorge is closed by the Mount Morris Dam, the largest concrete dam east of the Mississippi, built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s to protect the Genesee Valley from the floods that once devastated Rochester downstream. A visitor center perched on the rim explains the engineering and the region's flood history, and free ranger-led tours (in season) walk out onto the dam itself, 750 feet across and towering above the river far below. The overlook here gives a stirring view straight down the gorge you explored the day before. It is an easy, informative morning stop with a genuinely dramatic vantage.
