Grand Haven — Lake Michigan Dunes, Piers & the Great Lakes Coast

Cross the Lower Peninsula to the sunset coast and Grand Haven delivers the quintessential Lake Michigan weekend: a state-park beach backed by dunes, a long concrete pier marching out to a candy-red lighthouse, and a boardwalk that traces the Grand River from downtown to the open lake. Day one plants you at Grand Haven State Park — one of the most beloved beaches in Michigan — with the pier walk to the twin lighthouses and the mile-and-a-half riverfront boardwalk into a lively harbor town famous for its musical fountain. Day two climbs into the wild dunes of P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, where the Gillette Dune Center interprets the living landscape and the Dune Climb Stairway ends at a soaring overlook of Lake Michigan before the long drive home. It is the west-coast beach town of the Michigan imagination, at the far edge of a day's reach.

Grand Haven State Park is 48 acres of pure Lake Michigan beach at the mouth of the Grand River — a vast expanse of soft sand meeting turquoise freshwater surf, backed by low dunes and framed by the harbor's twin lighthouses. It is consistently rated among the best beaches on the lake, and for good reason: the swimming is superb, the sunsets legendary, and the setting compact enough to walk everywhere. Arrive early on summer weekends, as the beachfront lot fills fast. A Recreation Passport covers entry. Stake out a spot in the sand — this beach is the anchor of the whole weekend.

The Grand Haven South Pier is the town's icon: a long concrete catwalk striding out into Lake Michigan to a pair of candy-red lighthouses connected by a raised catwalk, one of the most photographed scenes on the Great Lakes. Walking the pier to the outer light puts you out among the gulls and the surf with the open lake on every side and the harbor traffic sliding past. Check conditions before you go — the pier closes and is genuinely dangerous during high wind and big waves, which can wash clean over it. On a calm day it is the finest short walk in town.

Downtown Grand Haven lunch
Grand Haven's compact downtown, a short walk up the boardwalk from the beach, is packed with waterfront cafes, brewpubs, and ice-cream shops along Washington Avenue and the riverfront. It is the easy midday break between beach and boardwalk — grab a table on a patio overlooking the harbor and the boats. Whitefish, lake perch, and Michigan craft beer are the local specialties. The town buzzes on summer weekends, so expect a wait at the popular riverfront spots.

Grand Haven Boardwalk
Grand Haven Boardwalk
4.8
The Grand Haven Boardwalk is a mile-and-a-half waterfront walkway that links downtown to the state-park beach, tracing the Grand River channel past marinas, the Coast Guard station, fishing spots, and the famous musical fountain. It is a flat, easy, endlessly diverting stroll — boats and freighters coming and going, anglers working the channel, and the pier and lighthouses drawing you toward the lake at the far end. Walk it in the late afternoon and you can time your arrival at the pier for the golden hour. It ties the whole waterfront together on foot.

Sunset over Lake Michigan is the reason people love the west coast, and Grand Haven stages it as well as anywhere — the sky and water flare orange and violet behind the red lighthouses at the end of the pier while crowds gather on the beach. Bring a blanket, claim a spot on the sand or partway out the pier, and watch the sun drop straight into the lake. On summer evenings the Grand Haven Musical Fountain across the river adds a lights-and-water show after dark. It is the perfect close to the first day.

Grand Haven lodging (Harbourfront or downtown inn)
Staying in Grand Haven puts you steps from the beach, boardwalk, and downtown for the evening and an easy start to day two. Harborfront hotels and inns along the riverfront are the prime choice — book well ahead for summer weekends, when the town fills. If waterfront rooms are gone, the Grand Haven and neighboring Spring Lake area has a range of chain hotels a few minutes inland, and campgrounds at the state park itself book out months in advance.

Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center
4.7
The Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park is the finest dune interpretive center in Michigan, built into the wooded backdune and dedicated entirely to the ecology and geology of the Lake Michigan dunes. Exhibits explain how prevailing westerlies and glacial sand built the towering coastal dunes, and a multi-image theater dramatizes a year in the dune landscape. Start here to understand what you are about to climb — then step out the back onto the trail network. It is an ideal, shaded first stop before the sun climbs and the sand heats up.

From the visitor center a wooden stairway of roughly 165 steps climbs the forested backdune to a platform perched high above Lake Michigan — one of the great dune overlooks on the coast, with the beach, the surf, and the endless blue horizon spread out below. Beyond the overlook, sandy foot trails wind through the open dunes and can be followed down to the beach for a barefoot descent into the lake. It is a genuine workout up and a spectacular reward at the top; carry water, as there is no shade on the open sand.

Hoffmaster Beach & Homestead Trail

Hoffmaster protects nearly three miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline — quieter and wilder than the town beaches, backed by wooded dunes with no development in sight. A final walk down the Homestead or Dune Ridge trail delivers you to the water for a last swim or beachcombing session before the drive home. The contrast with Grand Haven's lively strand is the point: here it is just sand, surf, and dune grass. Rinse off, shake out the sand, and point the car back east.
