Where lakes Huron and Michigan meet, the Straits of Mackinac have been a crossroads of the Great Lakes for centuries — a place of fur-trade forts, a car-free island frozen in the Victorian era, and some of the darkest night skies in the eastern United States. The long haul north up I-75 is the price of admission to Michigan's most storied corner. Day one explores Mackinaw City and Colonial Michilimackinac, the reconstructed 1715 French-and-British fur-trade fort beneath the Mackinac Bridge. Day two crosses to Mackinac Island, where no cars are allowed and the way to see it is by bike — an 8-mile shoreline loop past Arch Rock and up to the ramparts of Fort Mackinac. Day three turns to the wild coast: the Headlands International Dark Sky Park and the beaches and forests of Wilderness State Park before the drive home. It is the definitive northern-Michigan long weekend.

M-185 Shoreline Bike Loop
Mackinac Island bans motor vehicles, so the way to see it is by bicycle — and M-185, the 8-mile paved road that rings the entire island, is the only state highway in America where cars have never been allowed. The flat, car-free loop hugs the Lake Huron shore the whole way, passing rocky beaches, the towering Arch Rock, historic markers, and constant water views with no traffic and no hills. Rent a bike at the ferry dock or bring your own on the boat, and plan 1.5 to 2 leisurely hours with stops. It is the quintessential Mackinac experience and the best possible introduction to the island.

★ 4.8Arch Rock is the island's natural showpiece — a 50-foot limestone arch soaring nearly 150 feet above the Lake Huron shore, formed by wind and water eroding away the softer stone around it.
