Waterloo-Pinckney — Chain-of-Lakes Hiking & Kayaking Below Ann Arbor

The largest state-park complex in Michigan's Lower Peninsula sits barely an hour west of Detroit, a rumpled landscape of glacial moraines, kettle lakes, and hardwood ridges left behind by the retreating ice sheet. The adjoining Waterloo and Pinckney Recreation Areas together protect more than 30,000 acres threaded by the Waterloo-Pinckney Hiking Trail, one of the longest continuous footpaths in the Lower Peninsula. This day trip pairs a morning hike on the trail's most scenic ridge-and-lake sections with an afternoon of paddling the Pinckney chain-of-lakes, a connected string of clear kettle lakes made for kayaks and canoes. Silver Lake anchors the day with its swimming beach and boat launch, and the historic mill towns of Chelsea and Dexter bracket the drive with good food and cold beer. It is the closest thing to a true wilderness day within reach of the city.

Rochester & Stony Creek — A Gilded-Age Estate, Paint Creek & Metropark Shore

Barely forty-five minutes north of downtown Detroit, the well-heeled town of Rochester and the rolling parkland around it make one of the easiest and most rewarding day escapes in southeast Michigan. The day opens at Meadow Brook Hall, the 110-room Tudor-revival mansion built in the 1920s by Matilda Dodge Wilson — widow of auto pioneer John Dodge — one of the finest surviving examples of American country-house architecture and a National Historic Landmark. From there it is a short hop into walkable downtown Rochester, where restored storefronts, coffee roasters, and the crushed-limestone Paint Creek Trail — Michigan's first rail-to-trail conversion — invite an unhurried stroll along the water. The afternoon eases into Stony Creek Metropark, 4,500 acres of woods and a swimmable lake for a lazy shoreline walk before the short drive home.

Windsor, Ontario — Riverfront Sculpture, Walkerville Whisky & Ottawa Street

Just across the Detroit River lies a different country and a wholly different mood — Windsor, Ontario, the only major Canadian city that sits south of its American neighbor and looks back at the Detroit skyline from the water's edge. This single-day crossing pairs the open-air Odette Sculpture Park along the riverfront, the intimate Art Gallery of Windsor, and the red-brick Walkerville district that grew up around Hiram Walker's Canadian Club distillery in the 1850s, with an afternoon of shopping and café-hopping on Ottawa Street. The tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge each put downtown Windsor roughly twenty-five minutes from downtown Detroit, but this is an international border: a valid passport, passport card, or enhanced driver's license (an ordinary license will not do) is required to cross in both directions, so pack your documents before you set out.
