Lansing & East Lansing — The Capitol, Michigan's History & Spartan Country
Ninety minutes northwest of Detroit, the twin cities of Lansing and East Lansing pair the seat of Michigan government with one of the great public universities of the Midwest. Day one is civic and historical: the restored 1879 State Capitol with its soaring cast-iron dome, the Michigan History Center's sweep from the Ice Age to the auto age, and the galleries, breweries, and antique shops of Old Town Lansing along the Grand River. Day two crosses into East Lansing and the sprawling, tree-shaded campus of Michigan State University — a land-grant pioneer founded in 1855 — to take in the striking Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum designed by Zaha Hadid and the serene W.J. Beal Botanical Garden before the drive home. A comfortable overnight in Lansing links the two days.

Michigan State Capitol
★ 4.6Dedicated in 1879 and designed by architect Elijah E. Myers, the Michigan State Capitol is a National Historic Landmark and one of the first state capitols to emulate the U.S. Capitol's cast-iron dome. A meticulous restoration returned its interiors to their original polychrome splendor — hand-painted ceilings, more than nine acres of decorative surfaces, and a luminous glass floor beneath the rotunda. Free guided tours explain the building's craftsmanship and Michigan's political history, from the Civil War regimental flags in the rotunda to the working House and Senate chambers. It is an excellent, unhurried first stop that sets the historical tone for the day.
