Enchanted Rock, Fredericksburg & the Lost Pines

A 0.8-mile trail to the summit of the 1,825-ft granite batholith, the largest exposed granite dome in the United States. The climb is short but steep, with 300 feet of scrambling over bare rock; the summit has 360° views of the Hill Country and the surrounding sea of live oak and cedar. The rock's pink Precambrian granite is 1.1 billion years old — among the oldest exposed rock in North America.

A vertical spring vent at the floor of Cypress Creek — the water surges upward from a cave system that descends 140 feet straight down into the Edwards Aquifer. Swimming is in the pool around the vent; snorkeling the opening reveals the upwelling current. Timed entry permits are required and sell out weeks ahead in summer. The surrounding cypress grove and limestone bluffs are among the most scenic creek environments in the Hill Country.

Wimberley's crown jewel — a spring-fed swimming hole on Cypress Creek where cold, crystal-clear water flows beneath ancient bald cypress trees. The town-owned park limits daily visitors to preserve the magic; arrive early for the best spots on the natural limestone banks.

A series of cascading falls and natural swimming holes on Cypress Creek just outside Wimberley, accessible by a short trail through cedar and oak. In summer, local kids leap from the limestone bluffs into the cold green pools — a quintessential Hill Country swimming experience.

The Lost Pines — a 70-square-mile island of loblolly pine forest stranded 100 miles west of the main East Texas Piney Woods since the last ice age — were devastated by a 2011 wildfire that burned 96% of the park. The recovery is a living ecological study: burned snags alongside regenerating pine seedlings, rare Houston toad habitat being restored, and a forest that has proven more resilient than anyone predicted. The Lost Pines Trail is 8.7 miles through varied terrain.

A charming creekside café in Smithville serving house-made sandwiches, quiche, and baked goods to Bastrop county regulars and park visitors. The café sits on the Colorado River bank with a deck overlooking the water — the peach tea and the turkey cranberry sandwich have loyal followings among weekend hikers.

Bastrop's Main Street commercial district is one of the best-preserved 1880s town centers in Central Texas — the Colorado River bridge, the 1889 Opera House, and 35 contributing structures on the National Register of Historic Places. The town was a major crossing point on the Old San Antonio Road (El Camino Real) and served as the jumping-off point for Stephen F. Austin's colonists entering Texas in the 1820s.
