An hour southwest of Boise the flat farmland of the Snake River valley crumples up into the Owyhee Front, the abrupt first wall of the Owyhee Mountains. Tucked into a slot canyon at their base is Jump Creek Falls, a 60-foot ribbon of water pouring into a boulder-choked grotto reached by a short, rocky scramble — one of the most photographed hidden corners in southwest Idaho. This day pairs that canyon with the wide-open water and marshes of Lake Lowell, a national wildlife refuge and one of the region's best birding spots, and the sagebrush foothills and orchards around the river town of Marsing. It is a compact loop of desert canyon, refuge wetland, and rimrock backroad, small enough to fold into a single day yet varied enough to feel like real country. ★ 4.8The morning's prize is a slot-canyon gem hidden in the Owyhee foothills southwest of Marsing: Jump Creek pours 60 feet over a lip of rhyolite into a shaded grotto walled by dark volcanic rock. The trail from the BLM parking area is short — barely a quarter mile — but genuinely rocky, requiring a boulder scramble and a creek crossing or two to reach the base of the falls, where a pool collects in the cool shadow of the canyon. It runs fullest and loudest in spring; by late summer it slims to a graceful trickle. Go early, both for light down in the narrow canyon and to beat the crowds this popular spot draws on weekends. Wear real shoes for the wet, uneven rock, and consider the short scramble up the canyon rim for a view over the whole cleft.

Between the falls and the river town of Marsing the road climbs into the sagebrush foothills of the Owyhee Front, the mountains' abrupt eastern face rising straight out of the valley floor. Pull-offs along the rimrock look back east across the patchwork of orchards, vineyards, and farmland on the Snake River plain, with the Boise Front and the Owyhees framing the horizon. This is short-hike and viewpoint country — a few informal trails climb the basalt benches, and the light on the layered volcanic cliffs is superb late in the day. It is a low-key, wander-and-look leg that connects the canyon of the morning to the wetland of the afternoon.

The Sandbar River House Restaurant (Marsing)
Right on the bank of the Snake River in Marsing, the Sandbar is the natural lunch stop — a relaxed riverside room and patio where you can watch the water slide by over a burger, steak, or plate of the day. It is the town's best-known table and a genuine local gathering spot, cold-drink friendly and unhurried after a morning scrambling around the falls. Marsing and neighboring Homedale have a few other honest cafes if the Sandbar is full or closed.

Lake Lowell — Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge
★ 4.3Lake Lowell, the heart of the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, is one of the best birding sites in southwest Idaho — a large, shallow irrigation reservoir ringed by marsh, cottonwood, and grassland that draws hundreds of thousands of ducks and geese on migration and hosts bald eagles, pelicans, grebes, and shorebirds through the year. Easy, mostly flat trails trace the shoreline and the wooded dikes; bring binoculars and walk quietly along the water's edge at the refuge's foot-traffic areas. The refuge visitor center has maps, a checklist of species, and current sightings. Fall and spring migrations are the spectacle, but the lake rewards a walk in any season, and the wide water and distant Owyhee skyline make an easy, restful counterpoint to the morning's canyon.
