Fairfield & the Camas Prairie — Spring Blooms, Soldier Mountain & the Prairie Backroads

An hour and three-quarters east of Boise, the highway climbs onto the vast, open floor of the Camas Prairie — a high mountain basin ringed by the Soldier Mountains where, each spring, the blue camas lily blooms so thickly across the wet meadows that early travelers mistook the fields for lakes. This unhurried two-day escape settles into the tiny prairie town of Fairfield to walk among the camas blooms, ride or wander the flanks of Soldier Mountain, and follow the empty backroads that thread the prairie's wide silence. Day two lingers along the Little Wood River, out to the near-ghost hamlet of Hill City, and across the grasslands before the easy drive home. It is a weekend of enormous skies, meadowlark song, and the particular stillness of one of Idaho's least-crowded high valleys.
