Chelsea & Hell — Purple Rose Playhouse, the Jiffy Town & a Trip to Hell
This day trip pairs one of Michigan's most charming small towns with its cheekiest, an easy loop west of Detroit through the folded hills of Washtenaw and Livingston counties. Chelsea is a storybook stop: a walkable downtown anchored by the towering silos of the Chelsea Milling Company — makers of Jiffy Mix since 1930 and the reason the whole town smells faintly of baking — plus the Purple Rose Theatre, the acclaimed professional playhouse founded by hometown actor Jeff Daniels. From there it is a short country drive to the unincorporated village of Hell, Michigan, a tongue-in-cheek roadside curiosity where you can be crowned Mayor of Hell for a day, watch the Gates of Hell, and order a scoop of 'damned' ice cream at Screams. Quirky, low-key, and thoroughly local, it is Michigan's most entertaining half-day double feature.
